Essay Prompt: Does a major in athletics meet your expectations for what a college education should be about? Why or why not?
Education should be about gaining knowledge and opportunity to better oneself. Some children do not have the opportunities some of us have had. Some of us had had the privilege of a good education system other do not have that luxury. The education system shouldn't be just about high test score it should also be about the students enjoying themselves and studying major or courses that are of their interest.
In the article "Still Separate, Still Unequal" by Jonathan Kozol it talks about segregation in the education system in big cities. The article also mentions how the schools that are dominantly composed of black and hispanic students are not being payed attention to physically and in the curriculum.
"It's as if you have been put in a garage where, if they don't have room for something but aren't sure if they should throw it our, they put it there where they don't need to think of it again." (Kozol 43)
In this quote it's described how segregation amongst the schools which are generally populated my minorities are effected. Schools should be able to accommodate children of every background and interest. Children shouldn't be judge my their economic background or their race. Every student should be given an equal education and equal opportunity.
"Do kids who go to schools like these enjoy the days they spend in them? Is school a happy place to be?" (Kozol 51)
Kids in elementary school as well as college students should enjoy their time spent in a classroom. Each and every student should have something in their day at school they can look forward to. As some people are highly athletic and would love to have a major in athletics they should be able to pursue this as long as they meet certain academic requirements. I am a criminology major and love everything that comes with it. I would not be a fan of taking dance or cooking class because it is the only classes available. Why should these students or inner-city schools have only those classes available?
"At Fremont High, in contrast, this requirement was far more than often met by courses that were basically vocational and also obviously keyed to low-paying levels of employment."(Kozol 52)
Many educational systems prepare students to fit the job their parents are doing are equal jobs. What is these students want to achieve something different, something more? Some students are not given this opportunity. More often than not students are obligated by their parents to study a certain major or go towards a certain career path. Is this something the education system should do. I believe not the education system should give the student more opportunities than if they didn't attend any type of school but some schools miss this objective.
"Some of the classrooms, as court papers also document, 'do not have air conditioning,' so that students, who attend school on a three-track schedule that runs year around, 'become red-faced and unable to concentrate' during 'the extreme heat of the summer." (Kozol 51).
A classroom environment should equip children with the chance to learn. With physical challenges in the classrooms like it's illustrated in the quote above it's impossible for students to gain the proper knowledge they need. The main point of an education system in my opinion is to prepare student to be successful but also have the opportunity to do with something that is loved my this student. My forcing certain classes or majors or omitting them, students are not able to get to their full potential. With academic requirements student should have a broader choice of major to pursue.
